By May 1876, the confrontation between the US military and the Lakota intensified. Following an ultimatum issued by the US government, Custer's expedition was set into motion under the command of General Alfred Terry. However, division plagued the American forces, and the arrogance of Custer would soon shine through. His tendency to prioritize personal glory over strategic caution led him to continuously launch pursuits without waiting for reinforcements.
Despite receiving warnings from scouts about the gathering numbers of Lakota warriors, Custer charged ahead without waiting for the needed backups, believing victory was simply at his fingertips.
