Programs that teach students useful trades, such as welding—where students can leave school and earn substantial salaries—are what we need to see more of in education. When presented with the possibility of earning $75,000 a year fresh out of high school thanks to a practical skill, the value of an outdated educational model becomes starkly apparent.
What exists now is often a labyrinth of bureaucracy that fails to empower students and address their needs. The inability of children to effectively navigate corners of the educational system that would better serve them should prompt a re-evaluation of our current practices.
