Despite the immense importance of public broadcasting, Hillyard laid bare the persistent challenges it faces. Since the passage of the Public Broadcasting Act in 1967, various administrations have attempted to diminish or eliminate funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Each time, congressional representatives have risen in defense of public broadcasting, rebuffing efforts to undermine its financial support.
Hillyard expressed hope that the current Congress would continue this trend, emphasizing the community connections and local representation that play a crucial role in sustaining public broadcasting services.
