The Medici name, though powerful during Catherine’s reign, faced growing challenges. By the time Lorenzo II took control, conflict and instability marred their legacy. Political miscalculations, including an unpopular alliance with the French, began the slow dissolution of their influence.
In the following years, Tuscany experienced chaos. The assassination of Alessandro de' Medici led to the rise of Cosimo I, who would eventually claim the title of Grand Duke of Tuscany and strengthen Medici power through military conquest. However, a decline began with his successors, as they lacked the vision and capability of their forebears.
