Post-war, numerous Nazis managed to flee with surprising success. An estimated 10,000 individuals linked to the Nazi party left Germany. Noteworthy among them were SS members who relied on the “Odessa” escape routes, a strategy thought to be either a coordinated effort or a series of independent plans for escape. South America, particularly Argentina, became a primary refuge, where former Nazi officials found asylum.
In addition, low-ranking individuals within the Nazi regime sought refuge by collaborating with American intelligence, which inadvertently allowed several to evade justice for their wartime crimes.
