As the story goes, Blackwater operatives were informed of a potential threat, specifically a white Kia suspected to be a car bomb. Despite attempts to signal the approaching vehicle to halt, it did not comply. The operatives, acting on their training and under grave suspicion of severe threat, opened fire on the vehicle, ultimately resulting in civilian casualties, including the death of the driver who was merely transporting his mother.
Afterward, what was initially reported as a minor incident unfolded into a significant crisis. Official communications with the company were contrary to the expected protocol and soon, the State Department distanced itself from Blackwater in the aftermath, describing the actions as excessive and inappropriate.
