Despite U.S. claims of progress following the battle, the Second Seminole War continued for several more years. The Seminole resistance was far from broken; rather, it became galvanized. As the Seminole retreated further into the depths of the Everglades, this region became a sanctuary where U.S. forces struggled to gain a foothold. The war turned increasingly unpopular and costly for the U.S. government.
