However, the dazzling riches and luxurious lifestyles were overshadowed by the dark reality—a tripling of the murder rate between 1975 and 1981. The carnage escalated so dramatically that in 1979, Miami recorded 349 murders, with that horrifying figure soaring to 621 by 1981.
