Part 2/8:
Born in 1838 in Salem, Indiana, John Hay's family migrated to Warsaw, Illinois, when he was three. In search of better education, Hay later lived with his uncle in Pittsfield. His uncle was acquainted with Abraham Lincoln, having trained at Lincoln's law firm, thus intertwining Hay’s early life with the future president's. Hay attended Brown University, where he graduated with a Master of Arts in 1858, earning the distinction of class poet.
