Part 5/8:
A New Chapter: Diplomacy and Literature
After Lincoln’s assassination, Hay traversed the diplomatic landscape of Europe, serving in various capacities under different presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant. His time as a journalist for Horace Greeley’s New York Tribune further bolstered his profile, where he gained recognition for his literary talent and wrote about significant events, including the Great Chicago Fire.
Hay later married Clara Stone, a union that brought him both personal happiness and financial security, furthering his standing in society at a time when he also began to involve himself in politics once more.
