Allen Dulles was born on April 7, 1893, in Watertown, New York, into a family deeply embedded in government service. He was the nephew of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and attended Princeton University, graduating before joining the State Department as a diplomat. Dulles’ early career saw him stationed in Vienna and subsequently in Bern, Switzerland, where he became acquainted with the intricacies of European politics and diplomacy.
During World War I, Dulles was involved in significant diplomatic engagements, including an alleged meeting with Vladimir Lenin. This experience with international relations and political intrigue set the stage for his later espionage work.
