The 1932 Election: A Reckoning
With the public's anxiety and anger palpable, Hoover's bid for re-election in 1932 faced an uphill battle against Franklin D. Roosevelt, who promised an active government response to economic troubles. Roosevelt's charisma juxtaposed with Hoover's rigid stoicism made the latter appear increasingly outdated. The election was a debacle for Hoover, who subsequently became one of the least popular presidents in American history.
After his defeat, Hoover's post-presidency was marked by an ongoing quest for reclamation of his legacy. His humanitarian work during World War II would eventually contribute to a shift in public opinion regarding his earlier presidency.
