Despite excelling in his academic pursuits, earning his doctorate at the University of Michigan, Kaczynski's philosophical foundation began to shift. He started developing a deep-seated contempt for the societal structures surrounding him, viewing industrialization and technological advancement as threats to human freedom, which he expressed in a lengthy manifesto titled "Industrial Society and Its Future."

During this period, he meticulously crafted homemade bombs, which he would later use in a 17-year-long terrorist campaign targeting those he felt embodied the technological society he despised.
