The introduction of European settlers had dire consequences for these Indigenous populations. Following the shipwreck of Jonathan Dickinson in 1696, when he encountered the Hobe Indians, the arrival of new diseases during the early 1700s led to the decline and eventual death of both the Hobe and the Hague tribes. Despite their absence, the legacy of the Hobe influences the namesake of nearby Hobe Sound and the town name Jupiter itself, which has roots in the word "Hove," translating to "god of the sun" and subsequently to "Jupiter."
