Unfortunately, the sequel failed to live up to the expectations set by its predecessor. Directed by Yan Deont, The Cradle of Life was marred by an uninteresting villain and uninspired action sequences. With a significant drop in box office performance, the franchise was left floundering as Jolie moved on to other projects. The ensuing years saw a dip in the popularity of Lara Croft; she no longer represented the glamorous action-hero figure she once did.
