Among the many aspiring pioneers was William Smith Allen, a farmer from Connecticut who became the first recorded settler in the Everglades area. He had settled on what is now known as Allen’s River, previously Potato Creek. Near the same vicinity, John Weeks made his mark as the first white pioneer on Chokoloskee Island, forming the foundations of the early community.

Life for these early settlers was a mix of hardship and resilience. While many viewed the lush wilderness as a paradise, the realities of survival by fishing, hunting, and farming were brutally challenging. Communication and transport were primarily by sailboats, and journeys were determined by the whims of weather and tides.
