Part 2/6:
Peter and Harrison's adventure begins in Everglade City, where they step aboard a Gheenoe—a unique, custom-made boat perfectly suited for navigating the shallow waters of the Everglades. Harrison introduces Peter to the historical significance of the area, referring to it as the “last frontier” in America until the 1920s. Here, remnants of old homesteading properties tell the stories of settlers who faced the formidable challenges of storms, insects, and the swampy terrain.
The Ancient Inhabitants
As they journey through the Lopez River, Harrison shares intriguing tales of the Calusa Native Americans who inhabited the land over 2,000 years ago. These ancient people crafted islands out of shells and adapted to the harsh environment, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity.
