In this isolated expanse, we can find a few small communities populated primarily by Hispanic residents from Miami. The most notable among these is Montour Ranch, characterized by its unpaved streets and minimal amenities. Residents here often confront challenges such as theft and crime that stem from the nearby urban sprawl of Miami. Many have resorted to installing cameras and fences, but those measures have yielded little protection from opportunistic thieves. Regular encounters with wildlife, such as bears rummaging through garbage, further complicate life in this harsh environment.
