Part 4/10:
In light of the family's scandals and rising pressures, Edward Doheny sought to build a grand sanctuary for Ned and his growing family. In 1926, he purchased land in Beverly Hills and commissioned architect Gordon B. Kaufmann to design a mansion that would serve as a retreat from the chaos surrounding them.
Greystone Mansion was brought to life, evolving into a 46,000-square-foot Tudor Revival masterpiece crafted from Indiana limestone and topped with a Welsh slate roof. Completed in 1928 at a staggering cost of over 3.1 million dollars—about 58 million dollars today—it became the most expensive private residence in California at the time. Its sweeping landscapes, elaborate gardens, and magnificent entryways created a visual spectacle that captured the essence of opulence.
