Currently, LAX has three primary vehicle access points, all of which converge quickly, further complicating traffic flow. Within the horseshoe, the traffic dynamics involve continuous side-to-side movement for drop-offs and pick-ups, which ultimately limits roadway expansions as additional lanes would not significantly alleviate congestion.
As part of its strategy to modernize, LAX is investing approximately $30 billion in various initiatives to enhance the airport’s infrastructure. A key project is the introduction of a “people mover,” set to open in 2026. This innovative transit solution will allow passengers to travel quickly in and out of the terminal without adding more cars to the horseshoe.
