One of the standout features of the SP80 is its triaran configuration, comprised of three hulls. The two side hulls enhance stability, and by reducing hull contact with the water's surface, the vessel minimizes drag, which is a key factor in achieving higher speeds. The team notes that less hull area in contact with the water results in a more efficient sailing experience.
In line with the push for speed, SP80 incorporates a superventilating foil. This specialized design prevents the formation of bubbles that can destabilize hydrofoils and hinder acceleration beyond certain thresholds. By avoiding the drawbacks usually associated with hydrofoiling — akin to an “aerodynamic barrier” for aircraft — the SP80 team can pursue speeds well above 55 knots.
