The desire to protect one's social standing or survive in the political landscape may lead to actions seen as repugnant when viewed through a purely ethical lens. Yet, as been discussed within intelligence communities, such moral flexibility can serve to achieve more comprehensive and systemic outcomes, albeit at a potentially immense human cost.
