Showrunner Eliza Clark and crew aimed to make the series more reflective of current societal debates, emphasizing gender identity and diversity. Clark openly discussed how the show would portray a world where "chromosomes are not equal to gender" and how "oppressive systems inform identity." To this end, the series introduced a new character—trans man Sam Jordan—to drive home representation points that, according to the creators, were missing from the original material.
