During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Niantic implemented temporary changes to Pokémon GO to promote safety and social distancing. These included shrinking the range within which players could interact with PokéStops and gyms—allowing people to stay closer to shelters, avoid crossing roads, and reduce the risk of injury or exposure.
Many community members praised these adjustments, especially those with disabilities or health concerns. The expanded interaction radius meant that players with mobility challenges could participate more easily, interacting with points of interest from safer, more accessible locations. Parents with young children could manage gameplay more comfortably, and individuals with sensory or physical limitations found the game more inclusive.
