The initial film, which starred Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, failed to meet expectations at the box office, earning only around $33 million domestically against a considerably higher budget. While it managed to turn a profit internationally—thanks largely to Chinese box office—this was not enough to justify further investment in the franchise.
