Part 5/12:
The Changing Landscape of Content and Employment
The industry also faces a shift in the way content is produced and consumed. The model of long-running 22-episode network shows has largely been replaced by shorter seasons and binge-friendly streaming releases. This results in fewer episodes per show, which directly impacts writers’ earnings, especially when residuals are calculated per episode.
Moreover, the number of writers has surged due to the explosion of niche content across numerous streaming platforms. While there are more writers than ever before, the pay structure has not kept up, leading many to earn only the minimum residuals regardless of a show's success. Additionally, the promise of steady work has become uncertain, with studios rapidly canceling or not renewing series.
