This suppression extends into political and social norms, as violators are castigated, canceled, or worse. The spectacle of individuals wishing death upon political opponents, or expressing violent desires legally, exemplifies the erosion of civility and the normalization of hostility. Ironically, the dominant discourse condemns rhetoric of violence, even as actual violence—be it physical or social—becomes increasingly acceptable on certain sides of the political divide.
