If we observe caregivers or peers being overly critical, or if they reinforce certain fixed narratives—such as "I'm only good at sports" or "I must excel academically"—these beliefs can become internalized as unchangeable truths. For example, Samantha, a talented dancer praised her entire life, struggled to expand her identity beyond ballet, while her sister Martha, who was academically accomplished, found herself unprepared for failure because her identity was anchored in being "the smart achiever." These scripted identities, while useful for initial confidence, can become constraints when faced with real-world challenges.
