The Decline of Radical Materialism
In the 20th century, scientific thought was largely dominated by a radically materialist perspective. According to this view, the brain functions as a kind of little factory—an assembly line producing thoughts, much like packages moving along a conveyor belt. This analogy portrayed the mind as a byproduct of purely physical processes within the confines of the brain, which itself was considered the sole originator of consciousness.
