Part 2/10:
Maggie DeYoung, a graduate student in art therapy counseling, found herself at the center of a heated debate surrounding political expression. During her final year at SIUE, she participated in classroom discussions covering contentious topics such as race relations and religion—subjects often fraught with disagreement. She recounted that the university’s response to her expressing her views was disproportionate and punitive.
DeYoung shared her experiences, revealing that the university issued three no-contact orders against her, effectively banning her from having any contact—direct or indirect—with three students who complained about her beliefs. These orders extended beyond campus boundaries, functioning similarly to restraining orders.
