Many BRI projects have been criticized for environmental damage. Construction activities have led to deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction in ecologically sensitive regions. Social impacts, such as displacement of local communities and neglect of local needs, have further fueled criticism, igniting concerns over sustainability and equitable development.
Countries in Struggle
Dozens of participating nations now find themselves burdened by unsustainable loans, leading to economic distress and dependence on China. Several countries have already faced— or are at risk of— defaulting on their debts, which in some cases has resulted in the transfer of strategic assets or increased Chinese influence over their economies and politics.
