The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced an investigation into the possible dangers posed by these AI chatbots to minors. This move follows lawsuits filed against AI platforms such as OpenAI and Character AI by parents claiming that their platforms encouraged or indirectly contributed to self-harm among teenagers, including suicidal ideation.
In response, these companies are actively working to expand parental controls and implement safeguard measures. However, critics remain skeptical about the assumption that AI chatbots can substitute real human interaction.
"The idea that a chatbot or an AI therapist will somehow replace a doctor or a parent or a really healthy positive human interaction is just not real," one expert noted.
