Despite its promise, the EOP technology faces practical hurdles. One of the foremost concerns is repairability. In typical lithium-ion packs, individual cells or modules can be replaced if defective, making maintenance and recycling more manageable. However, if the entire battery is effectively a monolithic, sealed electrode pack, diagnosing and repairing faults could be challenging.
A major question remains: How would manufacturers replace or repair a defective section of this new battery? The absence of removable modules suggests that entire packs might need replacement in case of failure, which could undermine the cost and convenience benefits.
