Chinese state support plays a pivotal role in sustaining this façade. Companies like BYD are considered state champions, receiving generous subsidies and backing from government entities. The CCP actively promotes EVs as a symbol of national technological progress, further discouraging critical scrutiny or regulatory pushback.
But this support creates a tight-knit ecosystem where criticism is silenced. It is now nearly impossible to criticize BYD or similar firms openly within China—any dissent or negative reporting is dismissed as foreign interference or unpatriotic. A recent example of this is the self-ignition incident involving a BYD vehicle, which was quickly suppressed and obfuscated within official channels.
