Part 7/10:
Labor Exploitation and Manufacturing Malpractices
Beyond financial fraud, there are profound human rights concerns. Reports from court filings reveal that workers at BYD plants endure grueling hours, often working 14 to 15 hours per day, with minimal pay—roughly $9,700 per year in some cases. The factory in Xi'an, for instance, reportedly has only two operational supply lines, reflecting a slowdown in production.
Moreover, BYD is accused of forcing workers over 50 to resign and engaging in unfair labor practices, including employing underage or overage workers in its factories. Such exploitation mirrors China's broader labor issues—cheap labor, poor working conditions, and suppression of workers' rights.
