A team of independent, nonprofit divers based out of southern Illinois made the startling discovery a few days ago when they began scanning the river between Cicero and Diversy. Using advanced sonar technology, the divers identified not just one or two vehicles, but an astonishing array of vehicles—totaling 91 underwater—spread across the riverbed. To date, 35 of these vehicles have been successfully retrieved and cleared for further investigation.
The divers' mission is not only about vehicle recovery, but also about bringing closure to families and solving unresolved cases. Currently, none of the recovered cars have been found to contain human remains, which keeps the mystery ongoing but also provides potential hope that other clues may be uncovered.
