Multiple factors contributed to this defensive failure: missed tackles, poor execution in space, and a lack of physicality. The secondary was often out of position, and the front seven couldn’t generate enough pressure to disrupt UCLA’s rhythm. As a result, UCLA repeatedly answered Penn State’s scoring efforts with drives of their own, maintaining pressure and preventing PSU from mounting any significant comeback.
Penn State’s inability to get timely stops was maddening for players, coaches, and fans alike. Despite Jim Knowles’ reputation as a top-tier defensive coordinator—given his storied success at Oklahoma State and Ohio State—the unit failed to execute in critical moments.
