Notably, these units were given a nuclear role—equipped with the portable MK54 atomic demolition munition, a nuclear device small enough to be carried in a rucksack by specially trained Green Berets. This "deliberate deterrent" represented a unique aspect of Cold War posture against Soviet forces.
