Another major criticism is Gunn’s repetitive creative formula. His signature style—centered around flawed but lovable misfits, dark pasts, snarky humor, pop music montages, and dysfunctional family dynamics—has become predictable. While this approach worked well in Guardians of the Galaxy, applying the same template to Superman felt forced and inauthentic. The character’s inherently noble and serious tone clashed with Gunn’s broadly comedic, irreverent style. Attempts to shoehorn humor into Superman’s story only underscored a fundamental mismatch, contributing to the film’s lukewarm reception.
