One of the most immediate and impactful differences I’ve observed is the way Americans express their respect for the military. As a former service member—myself serving 14 years in the Royal Navy—and with my husband still on active duty, I find it’s surreal to see how publicly and warmly Americans thank service members in everyday life. Whenever my husband wears his uniform in public, people often stop to thank him for his service. This kind of recognition was unheard of in Britain, where such interactions were almost nonexistent, and service members were advised not to wear their uniforms openly for security reasons.
