Part 5/11:

Founded four decades ago by Richard Stallman, the Free Software Foundation has quietly been the backbone of much of today’s free and open-source software infrastructure. From powering operating systems like Linux and Android to providing crucial tools such as the GNU compiler, GPG encryption, and countless utilities, the FSF’s work underpins most of our digital lives.

Recently, the FSF announced its latest bold initiative: the Libriophone. Led by renowned hacker Rob Savois—who previously collaborated on projects like OpenStreetMap and making Flash work on Linux—their goal is audacious yet necessary: to replace every closed-source component in smartphones with fully free, open-source alternatives.
