Initially, Mushu's voice was considered to be provided by Joe Peshy, with a distinctive voice reminiscent of a wiseguy personality. However, late in the process, Disney executives, notably Michael Eisner, decided to cast Eddie Murphy as Mushu. This decision dramatically shifted the character’s personality and appeal. The animator was initially surprised—shocked even—by the choice, as it seemed a significant departure from the ethnically authentic casting approach, which aimed to involve Chinese actors for authenticity.
