The cracks within this global fellowship surfaced long before 2025. Still, the first significant trigger was in 2008, when traditionalist provinces grew increasingly uncomfortable with progressive shifts in sexuality and doctrine among some members like the Episcopal Church in the United States. This discontent led to the inaugural Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) in Jerusalem.

GAFCON’s foundational document, the Jerusalem Declaration, emphasized core doctrines such as the authority of Scripture, the historic creeds, marriage between one man and one woman, and abstinence outside of marriage. It positioned itself as a conservative counterweight to what it perceived as a departure from biblical orthodoxy in parts of the Anglican world.
