The ideological divide deepened as GAFCON increasingly refused to recognize Canterbury’s leadership, especially after the 2018 Lambeth Conference, which included controversial resolutions regarding sexuality.
The Defining Moment: Formal Separation Declared
On October 16, 2025, GAFCON's leadership made a decisive move. In a statement issued by Laurent Mabanda, chairman of the GAFCON Primates Council, they publicly declared a new direction for Anglicanism—one rooted solely in Scripture and the historic foundations of the Reformation.
