Historically, Tesla's FSD allowed users to set a definite target speed, which the vehicle would attempt to follow. Before version 12, this feature (called set speed) was a straightforward cruise control setting, enabling drivers to predetermine speeds like the speed limit plus a buffer.
However, Tesla transitioned away from this concept around version 12, citing safety and traffic adaptability, shifting to a system where the vehicle uses max speed profiles—such as Chill, Standard, and Assertive—that define the upper speed limit for FSD operation.
