Part 5/12:
Many might have a Nema 520 (or NEMA 14-30) outlet already in their garage, which offers about 1.7 kW—a roughly 25% increase over the basic 120V outlet. This can push your charging rate to 4-6 miles/hour.
Note: Many home setups default only to Level 1; upgrading to Level 1.5 or higher is advantageous if your setup allows.
Is Level 1 Home Charging Sufficient?
While technically feasible for typical daily driving, Level 1 isn’t ideal for most owners. It’s primarily recommended when:
Your daily commute is under 40 miles.
You’re willing to manage your charging schedule carefully.
You don’t mind plugging your car in every night and watching for low battery warnings.
However, it’s less convenient, less efficient, and has temperature-dependent limitations.
