Part 5/12:

Many might have a Nema 520 (or NEMA 14-30) outlet already in their garage, which offers about 1.7 kW—a roughly 25% increase over the basic 120V outlet. This can push your charging rate to 4-6 miles/hour.

Note: Many home setups default only to Level 1; upgrading to Level 1.5 or higher is advantageous if your setup allows.

Is Level 1 Home Charging Sufficient?

While technically feasible for typical daily driving, Level 1 isn’t ideal for most owners. It’s primarily recommended when:

  • Your daily commute is under 40 miles.

  • You’re willing to manage your charging schedule carefully.

  • You don’t mind plugging your car in every night and watching for low battery warnings.

However, it’s less convenient, less efficient, and has temperature-dependent limitations.
