The Breakthroughs of Polish Mathematicians
Contrary to the Germans’ unwavering confidence, the first cracks appeared in Poland. A small team of mathematicians in the Polish Cipher Bureau, led by Marian Rejewski, approached Enigma as a system of permutations and algebra, not just a puzzle of linguistics. Using the limited information available—mainly intercepted German messages and manuals—they modeled the machine mathematically.
