The social programming around fandom insults appears to be continually evolving. Just a few years ago, terms like Nazi or fascist were frequently employed as catchphrases to label anyone who disagreed with certain progressive narratives. Now, the buzzwords have shifted to "tourist"—a more dismissive and less serious-sounding insult, but nonetheless insidious in its intent.
This evolution reflects a broader pattern: the desire by some factions to establish ideological superiority and gatekeeping power. They claim to "know better," insisting that only their version of a franchise or genre warrants respect. When faced with dissent or contrasting views, they respond by flinging labels—whether "tourist," "bigot," "fascist," or "grifter"—rather than engaging in honest debate or critique.
