Part 2/12:
OpenAI researcher Mark Sulk announced on Twitter that he and his colleagues had used GPT-5 to make significant advances in solving ten open Erdős problems—famous and notoriously difficult questions in mathematics—and had made substantial partial progress on eleven more. The Erdős problems are a series of complex, decades-old math puzzles named after the legendary mathematician Paul Erdős, who famously traveled and lived on the move, dedicating his life to solving unsolved mathematical challenges. These problems often come with significant monetary prizes to incentivize solutions; solving one can be career-defining.
