It's important to acknowledge that AI, particularly models like GPT, does have meaningful utility. Tools that efficiently sift through vast amounts of academic literature are cutting-edge and help accelerate research. Automated theorem proving and pattern recognition are also promising areas.
However, this episode illustrates that claims of AI "solving" open problems must be carefully scrutinized. Finding existing solutions with the help of AI isn’t the same as solving new problems. Overhyping these abilities risks undermining public trust and leads to confusion about AI's genuine contributions.
